MUNCIE, Ind. – Jacksonville State closed out the non-conference schedule on Saturday with a 3-1 setback to Ball State at the Briner Sports Complex.

The Gamecocks wrapped up the out of conference slate with a 4-5 mark and now turn their attention to Ohio Valley Conference play beginning on Friday, Sept. 26 against defending OVC regular season champion UT Martin.  The JSU-UTM league lid-lifter is set for 7 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field.

JSU could not overcome two first half goals by the Cardinals of BSU, but gained momentum in the second half with a goal by freshman Kayla Thompson.  BSU (4-1-2) put its first of two goals before the 17th minute on Elaina Musleh goal ten minutes deep in to the contest.  Musleh connected on a shot from the right side of the net.

BSU’s Gabby Veldman tacked on the second goal of the half in the 16th minute after a rebound shot off of JSU goalkeeper Meara Johnson.  The Cardinals tallied five first-half shot attempts, while limiting the Gamecocks to just three in the first 45 minutes.  BSU, who finished with 14 total shots, had nine in the season half.  JSU was credited with five total shots in the setback.

JSU sliced the 2-0 deficit in the 51st minute after Thompson beat a Cardinal defender and went one-on-one with the BSU keeper.  The netted ball was Thompson’s third of her career after registering her first career goal against in the Mississippi Valley State contest.  The Brandon, Miss.-native had two of the Gamecocks’ five shots.  Sophomore Mackenzie Bellows posted two shots, including one on-goal attempt.
