The JSU Men’s Basketball team remain undefeated at home as they defeated Austin Peay 71-59.
D.J. Felder scored a career-high 18 points in the win. Darion Rackley had a team-high 26 points and eight rebounds. Dontay Jackson passed for seven assists in a career-high. On the defensive side, Jamal Hunter impressed with four steals and four blocks.
JSU field goal percentage was 41 percent and they shot 90 percent from free-throws.
The Gamecocks previously lost their last five games, so this was a big win for head coach James Green.
“I’m pleased with how we’ve taking care of business coming off those loses,” said coach Green in the post-game interview.
“To come back and have enough confidence to get off to the early start and shoot the ball the way we did was really good.”
JSU started strong with an 8-0 run. The Gamecocks found their first double-digit lead when Felder hit a jumper to put JSU up 18-7. JSU continued to control the first half and was up 41-28 at halftime. Felder led with 16 points in the half and Rackley posted 10. The Gamecocks shot 55 percent from the field in the first half.
It was in the second half when JSU reached their largest lead of the game which was 20. However, Austin Peay did make a run and came within five points with 6:15 left in the game. After a Rackley dunk, the Gamecocks regained momentum and control to seal the victory.
The Gamecocks are now 8-9 overall and 1-2 in the OVC. The Gamecocks have a perfect 7-0 record at home, but an upsetting 1-9 record on the road.
“I think our guys play off our people here. Eventually we gotta figure out a way to win on the road too,” Green said.
Well, Coach Green and the Gamecocks can wait on the road trip as they get ready to play another home game this Sunday against Murray State. The OVC matchup is scheduled for tip-off at 5 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum and televised by CBS Sports Network.
