The Jacksonville State volleyball team played in their third tournament of the season so far and lost their opening match to the University of South Dakota.

JSU went into the University of North Dakota’s 2015 Volleyball Classic looking for a boost before their conference play began. They played South Dakota suffering a sweep, then went on to play Wisconsin-Green Bay but were swept again.

In their first match against the South Dakota Coyotes, both teams began strong fighting for the lead.

The score bounced back and forth between the Gamecocks and the Coyotes with neither quite having the edge.

JSU pulled out to a 18-12 lead but USD scored quickly and the set was tied at 18. It would be tied again at 20, but the Gamecocks lost their momentum at 21, while USD went on to win the set 25-21.

The second set was the worst for the Gamecocks. They were only able to score 10, while the Coyotes racked up 25 points and .583 hit percentage for the set.

JSU was held to their lowest hit percentage of the match at .136.

The final set was the Gamecocks last chance for a win. After initially scoring first, the Gamecocks were sluggish as USD zoomed ahead 16-10, quickly.

JSU seemed to get better and slowly bumped the score up closer to the Coyotes until they were within two, 22-20. However, USD pulled away and got to 25 first leaving JSU at 22.

The Gamecocks hit .255 overall in the match with the first set being their best at .368. Allyson Zuhlke led the team in kills with nine, while Emily Rutherford had eight and Kim Krutsinger had seven.

On defense, Rutherford and Hannah Kirk both had doubles in digs with 11 and 10, respectively. True to form, Jennifer Hart led the team in assists with 30.

Later in the day the Gamecocks would be swept by Wisconsin-Green Bay by scores of 24-26, 16-25 and 18-25.

The next day of the tournament would be more of the same struggles for the Gamecocks as they were swept by both Drake and host North Dakota.

JSU falls to 4-7 on the season. After play at Jackson State on Sept. 16, JSU will start the UAB Tournament in Birmingham, Ala. on Sept. 18 against Ole Miss.
