The Gamecocks dropped to 3-5 on the season after a 2-0 loss to non-conference opponent Alabama on Sunday.
The first period brought the only goals scored in the game, both by Alabama. One came at the 12:30 marker by Bama’s Celia Jimenez. The second and final goal was also by Jimenez and came at 40:25 into the first period.
Alabama took 38 shots total, 25 of which came in the first period alone. JSU took only six shots and were never able to connect for a goal. Despite the loss, the Gamecocks did manage to have 10 saves on the day from keeper Caroline Robinson. Alabama had three saves from first period keeper Kat Stratton.
Both Claire Petersen and Courtney Hurt had two shots each, while Kelsey Bright and Madison Carruthers had one. For UA, it was Jimenez who scored both of Bama’s goals and managed eight shots on the day.
The Gamecocks kept the Crimson Tide from scoring throughout the entire second half, despite the 13 shots that were taken by Alabama.
The Gamecocks fall to 3-5 overall. They begin conference play on Sept. 24 against Morehead State. They will play at home at the JSU Soccer Complex at 7 p.m.
